The image below is of a stone step from the "Meeting House by the Ledge" described in the autobiographical portion of Oakes Smith's story, which is set in North Yarmouth, Maine, the village of her childhood. While the old church was long gone when the story was written, this step was left in place to mark the building's location. The property is now part of a resident's backyard, but the present owners have obliged the community's pride in the history of the monument to create an opening in their fence where one can, more or less unobtrusively, view the artifact.
