Fourth son of Elizabeth Oakes Smith, Alvin Oaksmith was born in Portland, Maine. An adventurer of a slightly different stripe than his brothers Sydney and Appleton, Alvin served for the United States as Vice Consul to Uraguay under James Buchanan. He married Delphina Alvarez (pictured below in later life) in Montevideo in 1860.
